Concerning TikTok Trend

Posted Date: 5/09/25 (4:39 PM)

We want to bring to your attention a concerning trend currently circulating on TikTok that has the potential to cause serious harm to students as well as school-issued devices. The trend involves students inserting pencils or other objects into the USB ports of their Chromebooks, which can lead to overheating, smoke, and the potential to catch fire.

This behavior is extremely dangerous and is being treated with the utmost seriousness. Any student found engaging in this activity will face disciplinary consequences in accordance with our student code of conduct. Additionally, families will be held financially responsible for the repair or replacement of the damaged device. If the student engages in this activity and payment is not received for the damages, the student could forfeit their ability to have a school-issued device.

We are asking all parents and guardians to please speak with your children about the risks and consequences of participating in such trends.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued partnership in keeping our school community safe.A statement from New York State's Deputy Fire Administrator Luci Labriola-Cuffe warns about the dangers of tampering with laptops, highlighting the fire hazard and toxic fumes.
